REBECCA HARRIS

"This weekend, I've attended events at two of our Conservative clubs.

The club on Canvey has been celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.  It's also been given an award for being the best Conservative Club in the country.  I was delighted to be able to bring along a personal letter from David Cameron, congratulating the staff, the Committee and the members on their achievement.

The club has grown and grown since its founding in 1959.  I suspect I won't be around when it reaches a hundred, but no doubt Ray Howard will be there to mark that mile stone too!

The Con club was clearly the place to be on Saturday night and Sunday during the afternoon.  People were queueing to get in.  Around the country, private clubs are struggling, and six pubs are going out of business every week, mostly thanks to Labour stealth taxes.  But the Canvey Island Conservative Club goes from strength to strength, playing a really important role in the life of the Island.

I also popped in to the Hadleigh club, where the Committee and members had put on a family day.  Although on a smaller scale than the events on Canvey, there was a great atmosphere, and my son had his face painted as a lion, which thrilled him.  It was a really enjoyable afternoon.

Later this year the Benfleet club will also be celebrating its 40th year. The three Conservative clubs in Castle Point play an important role in our community and for the Party.  I am proud to be a member of all three"

"The last week or so, we've seen the passing of two of the last WW1 veterans, Henry Allingham and Harry Patch, both real characters.  This follows the death, earlier this year, of Bill Stone.

All three were at the Cenotaph last year on Remembrance Day, marking 90 years since the end of the war.  All three seemed absolutely determined to reach that milestone.

The horror of the trenches in Northern France and Belgium cast a huge shadow over the whole of the twentieth century.  Only on Saturday night, I was speaking to a lady whose father came to Canvey after he was gassed in the fighting.

Now direct, first hand experience of the trenches has passed from living memory - a significant and sad moment"

“As a Mother of a young child it is very reassuring that Castle Point Council have put the safety of youngsters before profit by delaying the opening until the safety improvements have been implemented”

“We managed to drag Ted out of the sandpit only with the promise of quick return…..and an Ice cream!”

"I'm really delighted for Chloe Smith, the new Conservative MP for Norwich North.  It was a stunning victory for her, her team, and all the Conservative MPs and activists from around the Country who were out there knocking on doors and leafleting. I'm proud to say that we, Castle Point Conservatives did our bit"

"Victories like this are won by sheer hard work and organisation.  People's faith in politics has been rocked by what we've found our MP's were doing.  Our response has been to get out there and speak to people"

"Norwich North also sends a clear message to politicians who want to invent, distort or spin things about their opponents.  The public see through it, and will punish those who do it.  Chloe is an exciting young politician, a breath of fresh air.  She ran a direct, honest and positive campaign in contrast to the smears and dishonest name-calling by our opponents. Labour lied about Tory policies.  The result speaks for itself"

“The cake was just a small token of appreciation from us to Ray for all of the hard work he does upon behalf of Islanders no matter their political persuasion”

“We have an excellent committee of hard working ladies to whom we are all really grateful. Our meetings have changed somewhat since the days of obligatory hats and a resounding rendition of God Save the Queen at the close of the afternoon but we have been able to keep lot’s of our traditions including a glorious cup of tea from a china cup and saucer”

"I have been up in Norwich  helping Conservative colleagues get our candidate Chloe Smith elected as Conservative MP for Norwich North in the forthcoming by-election.  The by-election was called when the Labour MP, Ian Gibson, resigned after being told he could not fight the seat for Labour in the next election because of his use of parliamentary expenses.

The Conservative campaign is going really well.  Chloe is a young candidate, a breath of fresh air, and getting a lot of support.  If early local polling proves accurate, she stand to overturn a massive Labour majority - a great achievement for Chloe, her Conservative team and all the activists from across the country who have given their time to help.

Ian Gibson is a respected local MP who has fought hard for his constituents.  He took the view that he was elected as Labour and felt that he could no longer represent constituents on his 2005 mandate once Labour had thrown him out.  He could have carried on as an independent, but took an admirably principled position and stood down immediately.

I'm glad to have been able to support Chloe in Norwich but my number one job is fighting for the people of Castle Point.  I wish Chloe the best of luck."

"First Essex Buses have agreed to run a five day service to Morrisons from the 3rd August, I am delighted that First Essex buses have been able to offer this new journey to Canvey residents. A lot of people have told me that they find the current arrangements difficult, especially with heavy shopping bags and I am sure this will be of great help to them. I am particularly pleased that First have offered this service commercially, without any extra funding from the Council. If the service proves a success they have also indicated that they would be willing to consider improvements in future.”

"A couple of weeks ago, my family spent a Sunday morning helping out Neal Warren and his team from the Castle Point Wildlife Group and the charity Ground works,  in West Wood.  We had a great time, but it was good physical work shifting a whole load of mulch.  The wood was a special place, with lots of wildlife - my son loved it.

The wood is owned by the Church Commissioners, who lease it to Castle Point Council.  We now know they want to sell it.  The Church Commissioners are showing their customary commercial ruthlessness, and have rejected the Council's offer.  The Council is trying to get the best deal for the Council tax-payer.

If the Church Commissioners have their way, we don't know what will happen to this precious environment.  Local people are being invited to turn up on Saturday 11 July at 1500 to show they care about the future of West Wood - whether it's the Council upping their offer, whether it's persuading the Church Commissioners to give us more time, or if we can persuade the Church Commissioners to accept a fair price and be less greedy"

"Today is the fourth anniversary of the London bombings.

I guess we all remember what we were doing when the attacks took place.  I was on a scooter, passing Edgware Road tube station.  I saw shocked faces hurrying out the exit.  The sirens of emergency vehicles could be heard all over.  Although early reports suggested some kind of power surge, you could tell something serious was going on.

We remember today the poor people who lost their lives, or who suffered life-changing injuries.  But actually we were all to a lesser extent victims of terrorism that day.  We were all glued to the television.  We were uneasy on the tube.  We feared what would happen next.  That is what the terrorists wanted - to affect us all"

The battle out in Afghanistan today is directly related to the effort to make this country safe from terrorism.  It is not some optional foreign adventure.  We cannot allow Afghanistan to be a safe haven for terrorists to train and export terror from. The Welsh Guards are sustaining serious losses in Helmand.  The death of their Company Commander, and the loss of other servicemen over the last few days, shows how fierce the battle has become.  Over the next few weeks, this is going to get even more difficult.   For the sake of all our security, we need our troops, and those of the US, to succeed"

Some time ago, further education colleges were encouraged to put in bids for money from the Government for building projects.  Our own SEEVIC in Thundersley put in such a bid.  Then the Government found it had messed up the budget, and all the funding was suspended.

This has caused real problems for colleges, for their financial plans and day to day management. I may also endanger the further educational opportunities for our well deserving young people  at a time when good qualifications are  even more necessary to get on the job ladder.

It now seems that of the 100 plus bids, the majority have been "frozen". A mere 13 have been given the go-ahead.  And surprise, surprise - they are all in Labour held constituencies.  SEEVIC in Castle Point gets nothing.

This is a dangerous time for all of us.  The Government has stopped governing for the whole of the nation.  It is making decisions solely to limit the damage at the next General Election.

There was a great atmosphere at the Armed Forces Day event on Canvey.  My son is still waving his Union Jack flag.  But the death of the two Welsh Guardsmen on Wednesday reminds us what today's soldiering is all about.

The death of Lieutenant Colonel Thorneloe is a major blow to the Army.  He was a hugely respected soldier.  The loss of Trooper Hammond is no less a tragedy.

The Army has huge challenges ahead in Afghanistan.  I hope the US surge delivers results.  In the meantime, I am in no doubt their mission is vital for our security.  This week, we've been reminded of the costs.
