REBECCA HARRIS

This year, like last, we've spent our summer holidays in the UK.  Every time we do this, I wonder why people bother with the stress and aggravation of an airport or ferry terminal.  That said, we've been blessed with brilliant weather.

We've been using our holiday to do all those things we never seem to have enough time to do as a family. We've been to a couple of the special events at the Salvation Army Farm, including an excellent day organised by the RSPB.  My son investigated the grim contents of owl pellets and make a wormery.  We've spent a few days at the seaside, up at Frinton and at some of the pretty Suffolk villages further north.  My husband's threat of making me go to a campsite has, mercifully, not yet materialised, although the tent has been up on our lawn in Hadleigh!

We've just been touring Essex and Suffolk where there's been plenty to do.  But there are loads of places in the UK which are really worth a visit, and particularly if you've got kids.

Above all, I'm pleased that we've spent our holiday money supporting the local British economy and businesses.  And had a great time in the process.

"Upon news that West Wood has been saved I congratulate both Castle Point Council on securing the purchase and members of the excellent action group who have displayed fantastic energy to their cause. I know that all Conservative councillors wanted this outcome, but this has not been an easy or straightforward process and it was important that the Council taxpayer got value for money"

“As a regular Benfleet commuter I know that the approach to the station is awkward, so it is right that the County Council is investigating options to improve it. As with the A13 bus lanes idea, which was rightly rejected, what is important is that decisions are based on local opinion and real local knowledge - so anyone with a view on this please make sure you get in touch."

"I walked past the Home Office the other day.  I was handed a leaflet.  A Union rep outside the entrance was encouraging people to go on a demonstration against some BNP event in Derbyshire.

I thought about the BNP performance in Castle Point during the recent elections. No breakthrough, but a number of votes nevertheless.

People vote BNP because they are worried by a decade of Labour’s failed asylum policies, the dramatic increase in immigration, and failure to tackle illegal immigrats. Labour's uncontrolled immigration has helped to create a culture of fear and resentment - among British people of all ethnic backgrounds.  But the answer is not the BNP whose policies are a combination of extreme socialism and gesture nationalism.

Government has let down the public over immigration.  They've failed to manage it. People are here illegally, but this Government has lost the will to do anything about it.  There is an industry which uses the Human Rights Act to challenge every move the authorities seek to make.  Officials are demoralised and seem content to let cases drift until the illegal immigrant wins residency by default.

If you have rules, enforce them.  At the moment, that is not happening.  Damian Green, our Immigration Spokesman, came to Canvey recently to make this point and to stress Conservative Immigration policy would be to ensure people coming form outside the EU are only eligible for admission if they will benefit the economy and we'll set an annual limit on numbers to take account of the effects on society and public services.

I hope any Home Office employee who took a leaflet from the Union reps thought to themselves - I don't need to go to Derbyshire.  The way I can help defeat the BNP is to do my job properly and make sure the rules which Parliament brought in are enforced."

"Thrombosis can strike with such tragic consequences and without warning, even to the healthiest people and I really congratulate the Plewa family for doing something positive to try to stop others experiencing this dreadful disease."
