Yesterday the Conservative MP candidate for Castle Point, Rebecca Harris, brought the man who would be in charge of our legal system in a Conservative government, to Castle Point. Rebecca explained to Shadow Justice Secretary, Dominic Grieve how fears over excessive Health and Safely legislation and the growing compensation culture had threatened the future of one of Canvey's tidal pools.
While the Town and Borough Council are working together to try to save the pool, Rebecca wanted Dominic Grieve to hear how the problem had come about and discuss Conservative plans to tackle over-the-top Health and Safety rules. Rebecca has always supported the campaign to save the pool.
The Shadow Justice Secretary also met with prominent local lawyers, including David and Russel Hook of Hook and Partners, Canvey, to hear their concerns over the current state of the justice system and the shortcomings of current licencing rules.
The Shadow Justice Secretary confirmed the Conservatives plan to deal with this issue.
Rebecca Harris said "too many areas of our life are governed by petty rules, regulations and tick box bureaucracy that fly in the face of common sense, undermine discretion and prevent us from getting on with our lives. Conservatives will reduce the burden and impact of health and safety legislation in a responsible way. We will bring an end to the culture of excessive litigation, while at the same time giving legal safeguards to those who really need them".
The Conservative Party is working with Lord David Young of Graffham on an extensive review of the impact of health and safety legislation and regulation in Britain.
We are committed to reducing the burden and impact of health and safety legislation and regulation in this country, and to bringing some common sense back into compensation. But we are determined to go about this in a responsible, fair and sober way.
That is why David Cameron has asked Lord Young to lead an extensive review of this subject for the Conservative Party. Lord Young has a track record of deregulation and cutting bureaucracy as a Cabinet Minister under Margaret Thatcher. He also has experience in the legal profession and will judge these issues with the care and attention they deserve. |
