The Borough of Castle Point in Essex registered the highest percentage of ‘No’ votes in Thursday’s referendum on Alterative Vote out of every council district in the UK.
79.71% of those who voted in the referendum in the borough voted No. The borough with the next highest percentage of No voters was Broxbourne at 79.54%
Local MP Rebecca Harris, who campaigned against the alternative vote, says:
“The people of Castle Point take democracy very seriously and I am extremely proud that our Borough lead the whole country in saying No to AV. At door after door during the campaign I and my local party colleagues heard the same message, we would be mad to abandon the principle of one person one vote and an electoral system that is both emulated and admired around the world.”
