Handing the petition into 10 Downing St

Before Christmas, Rebecca met with campaigners to submit a petition to 10 Downing Street to push for stronger safeguards to check pet microchips.

Rebecca has long been a strong supporter of animal welfare and animal rights, which is why early last year she brought forward a Private Member's Bill to introduce Tuk's Law. The Bill would have made it a legal requirement for vets to scan a pet's microchip and check for any rescue back up before euthanising a healthy or treatable animal.

The Bill is the namesake of Tuk, a five-week-old Mioritic shepherd mistakenly identified as a stray and euthanised by a vet who failed to scan his original chip. The campaign highlights how Tuk's story should never have happened and sadly, without stronger safeguards, it can still happen again.

Although the Bill was blocked by the Government last year, Rebecca has emphasised that the campaign has not stopped.

Rebecca has welcomed the fact that the Government has now launched a targeted consultation on microchip scanning before euthanasia as a real opportunity to push for change. You can find out more details on the consultation via the tuks_law Facebook page: www.facebook.com/p/Tuks-Law-Scan-Me-100064712257683/?locale=en_GB

If you wan to support Tuk's Law, please take a few minutes to respond to the consultation by 9 January 2026. You can email your views to [email protected].

Commenting, Rebecca said: "I am a big supporter of Tuk's Law... Tuk's tragic death eight years ago showed why this simple safeguard is needed and sadly, without change, it can still happen.

"This is a real opportunity to push for a change that would save pets' lives."
