Pelican crossing approved after public campaign

Friday, 3 August, 2012

A zebra crossing on Somnes Avenue in Canvey Island is going to be upgraded to a pelican crossing following a sucessful campaign by local parents, local Councillor Ray Howard and Rebecca Harris MP

Parents at the nearby Winter Gardens Primary School submitted a petition to Essex County Council earlier in the year and Cllr Ray Howard and Castle Point MP Rebecca Harris lobbied Essex County Council for the upgrade to improve the safety of parents and children crossing the busy road on the way to school.

Cllr Howard said "After a long campaign we finally have the funding from the new local highways panel and the new crossing is definitely going ahead. These things take time to put in place but I am now working to ensure that the new crossing is designed and built as quickly as possible for local residents."

Rebecca Harris MP said "A large number of parents and children use that crossing almost every day to get to school and I am glad that as a result of a community effort soon they will be able to do so far more safely".
