Rebecca Harris MP for Castle Point spoke in favour of making St. Georges Day an English bank holiday in a debate in the House of Commons today.
Rebecca spoke in favour of a Private Members Bill put forward by Nadim Zahawi, Conservative MP for Stratford upon Avon, which seeks to make St. George’s Day an annual bank holiday in England, and St. David’s Day an annual bank holiday in Wales.
Rebecca said:
“I congratulate Nadim for proposing this.
I think it’s right that we should have a day off on St. Georges day to celebrate our English national culture the same way Scotland and Ireland do for their Saint Days.
We in England have far fewer public holidays than most other countries. So this could also give domestic tourism a boost.”
I am delighted the government are seriously going to look into it.”
