MY PROMISE TO WORK FOR YOU

Thank you to everybody who has contacted me throughout this year. Our democracy is strengthened by having determined Islanders speaking truth to power and that’s exactly what I would do if elected to be your Councillor in Canvey East.

I have lived on Canvey Island all my life and after years of growing up down the Point it has always concerned me that our local representatives seem to be either inactive or seriously out of touch. Currently, not a single one of our Independent councillors lives down our end of the Island. Which explains why, when it comes to Christmas lights, public safety and the maintenance of our street scene, Canvey East is too often at the back of the queue.

I am standing for election as a family focussed, working, young person on Canvey. Finally bringing some much-needed fresh ideas to the Council. Our local politics has grown stale with no change for
the last twenty years despite being represented almost entirely by the same Independents who say much but do little. It is time for new forward thinking and bold solutions to support us through our day-to-day challenges.

I have experience working both for a local accountancy firm and a Government Minister in Westminster. It is time residents have a professional, small-business friendly councillor that sets out realistic aims and most importantly gets them done. If I am elected as your only Councillor to actually live in Canvey East,
I will:
1 Work towards solutions to our housing problems that prevent anybuilding on the West marshes and flood-prone green spaces on the Island. Any development should put infrastructure first and focus on renovating derelict homes before looking elsewhere.

2 Vote for Community Ownership of the Paddocks. The future ofthe hall needs to be taken out of politics altogether. The Friends of the Paddocks Trust already has an innovative new plan to utilise those memory-filled spaces by renovating the old building through charitable funds.

3 Clean-up Canvey with an energetic drive to get on top of much needed repairs to our local street scene. This means renewing the busy Leigh Beck bus stop, proactively repairing broken street and road signs, and generally promoting the safe, polite, community minded society we all deserve to live in.

On 5th May 2022 we have an opportunity to elect a representative who will actively serve the community they grew up, live and am looking to build a family in. With your vote I can be the person asking the right questions for Canvey and finding common sense solutions to our community’s issues.
Thank You Owen Cartey
