On International Women's Day we asked some of our Councillor team to tell us the name of a woman who inspires them in their own public service.
Canvey Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Jay Blissett chose Emily Pankhurst whose 40 year campaign achieved complete success in the year of her death, when British women obtained full equality for the vote.
Benfleet Councillor, Sue Mumford told us βMy inspirational woman is Her Majesty the Queen. Queen Elizabeth II who has been our Queen since I was a child and I have always admired her. She has worked tirelessly for us and has remained stoic through many difficult times. Most women in their 90s would not be capable of doing the things she does. Her Majesty is intelligent, I have heard she has a brilliant sense of humour and when she smiles her eyes light up. A true inspiration to us all."
Thundersley Councillor Beverley Egan chose Mother Teresa, the Catholic nun who dedicated her life to caring for the destitute and dying in the slums of Calcutta and who was honoured in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
Thundersley Councillor, Pat Haunts had no hesitation in telling us that former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher will forever hold a place close to heart. A very popular choice indeed, a truly inspirational lady.
